Alvarion Director Named Chair Of License-Exempt Task Group Of The Broadband Wireless Access Standard IEEE 802.16

Task Group to Help Expand WiMAX Technological Parameters and Applications

Tel Aviv, Israel, July 13, 2005 - Alvarion Ltd., (NASDAQ: ALVR), the world’s leading provider of wireless broadband solutions and specialized mobile networks, today announced that its Director of Strategic Technologies, Mariana Goldhamer, was recently named Chair of the newly formed IEEE 802.16h Task Group. Topping the group’s agenda is the drafting of an amendment of IEEE 802.16 standard relating to improved coexistence mechanisms for license-exempt (LE) operation.

Underscoring Alvarion’s leadership role in many global standards bodies, Goldhamer’s appointment demonstrates the company’s commitment to develop a protocol that will significantly increase the market potential of multi-vendor wireless metropolitan area network systems based on the IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) standard. This protocol will also provide a solution for the so-called “contention-based protocol”, requested by the newly released FCC Rules that allow for non-exclusive licensing in the 3650-3700 MHz band.

Comprising of participants from world-leading telecommunications companies including BT, Intel, Microsoft, Motorola, Nortel and Huawei, the LE Operation Task Group is part of the IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards. The group’s goal is to ensure that multi-vendor WiMAX systems can be readily deployed in the license-exempt bands with reduced interference to other geographically co-located IEEE 802.16-based LE services. The establishment of such a standards-based license-exempt coexistence protocol is necessary to reduce concerns over WMAN inter-system interference in LE bands, and will significantly increase WiMAX-based systems’ market potential.

“The appointment of Mariana Goldhamer as Chair of the IEEE 802.16h license-exempt working group brings us another step closer to reaching industry-wide acceptance of the WiMAX standard,” said Ron Resnick, WiMAX Forum President. “Fully backed by Alvarion, Goldhamer has been campaigning to realize an industry supported solution for unlicensed WiMAX for some time. With the establishment of the LE task group and her appointment as Chair, Goldhamer now is in an ideal position to lead the adoption of the 802.16h standard.”

In addition to her most recent appointment, Goldhamer represents Alvarion in several other global standards bodies serving as Chair of ETSI HiperMAN, Vice-Chair of ETSI BRAN, and Co-Chair of ITU-R SWP 9B-1. Goldhamer also serves as the wireless broadband industry’s official liaison between IEEE 802.16 and ETSI BRAN and between the WiMAX Forum Regulatory Working Group and ITU-R SG9.

“Our company is proud to have Mariana Goldhamer represent us as Chair of the IEEE 802.16h LE task group,” said Rudy Leser, VP of Marketing. “Alvarion has an excellent track record of delivering technology to the broadband wireless market from WLAN 802.11 toward WMAN 802.16-2004 and onward to 802.16e. By participating in the LE committee, Alvarion is demonstrating its commitment to the ISM and UNII unlicensed spectrums that will accelerate the adoption of the WiMAX standard in additional markets throughout the world.”
