Alvarion Opens Local Representative Office in Milan, Italy
Office to Serve Growing Interest in Wireless Broadband and WiMAX Tel-Aviv, Israel, December 5, 2005 - Alvarion Ltd. (NASDAQ:ALVR), the world's leading provider of wireless broadband solutions and specialized mobile networks, today announced the opening of a new representative office in Milan, Italy, to serve the growing interest in the country for wireless broadband evidenced by the extensive number of pilot WiMAX networks recently awarded by the Italian government.
This summer the Italian Ministry of Communications announced the awarding of 53 WiMAX pilot networks to various vendors for operation throughout the country. Alvarion's BreezeMAX™ 3500, a WiMAX system, was chosen for networks in Milan, Rome, Arezzo, Piedmont, Val d'Aosta, Sardinia, Abruzzo, Sicily and Parma, more than any other vendor. This first round of pilot networks is scheduled for completion by the end of 2005.
"Together with our local partners, we have been accelerating our position in the Italian market for nearly two years," said Andrea Marco Borsetti, Alvarion Manager for Italy. "Now with Italy's broader recognition and expanded use of wireless broadband, it is important for us to respond with permanent local presence and additional support for our partners. Especially now with deregulation of the unlicensed no longer being limited to supporting networks in public areas, a quick and effective wireless network can be created in areas not served by main national operators," added Borsetti.
To date, Alvarion equipment has been deployed in Italy in thousands of urban links and connecting various mountain communities. Moreover, many video-surveillance projects have been implemented throughout the country, including in various municipal districts such as Molfetta, Colline di Langa and Barolo (Piedmont), and the Police Force Association of Colli (BG). These and other networks are the joint work of Alvarion's Italian team and its local distributors, including ELMAT of Padua, ESSENTIA of Reggio Emilia and SIDIN of Turin.
Each distributor works closely with a retailer who handles the sales, installation and commercial deployment of Alvarion's system. To ensure its professional standards are maintained, Alvarion has established certification courses to qualify system integrators. To date, Alvarion has more than 130 certified system integrators in Italy.
Until now, Alvarion's systems have primarily served applications in the public sector, such as connectivity in private municipal districts, provinces, regional networks, interconnections of various public structures (schools, local health centers, police), back-up systems for civil defense, video-surveillance, field data acquisition and environment monitoring.
BreezeMAX™, the solution being tested in the current trials, is Alvarion's WiMAX platform and was designed from the ground up according to the IEEE 802.16 standards using OFDM technology for advanced non-line-of-sight (NLOS) functionality. Its carrier-class design supports broadband speeds and quality of service (QoS) to enable carriers to offer multiple broadband voice data and services to thousands of subscribers from a single base station. Since its launch in mid-2004, BreezeMAX has been successfully deployed in over 130 installations throughout more than 30 countries around the world.
