Alvarion, Ltd. Provides Cegetel WALKair Equipment for Fixed Wireless Access Service in the 3.5 GHz Licensed Band

Tel Aviv, Israel, October 2, 2002 – Alvarion, Ltd., today announced that it is providing Cegetel – the telecom arm of French conglomerate Vivendi and France’s second largest ISP – with its WALKair solution for use in Cegetel’s cellular feeding applications and internet access services in La Réunion, an Indian Ocean island known for its dramatic mountain ranges and deep gorges. La Réunion geography poses unique challeneges for system integrators responsible for the deployment of a telecommunications infrastructure. Given the rugged terrain, Braodband Wireless Access (BWA) was the only network solution that met Cegetel’s demands.

Cegetel’s BWA network was built using Alvarion’s WALKair equipment. WALKair is a Point-to-Multi-Point (PMP) broadband wireless access system that is ideal for established carriers, like Cegetel, that want to expand their multi-access portfolios to include enhanced BWA services. WALKair utilizes dynamic bandwidth allocation to maximize bandwidth capacity and enables the widest range of high-speed data and voice services at the lowest cost, including: always-on Internet, VPN and LAN interconnect access; VoIP, legacy telephony and data network access; and application sharing, video conferencing, web hosting and E-commerce.

WALKair is a cost-effective and highly efficient approach for carrying subscribers’ voice and data traffic from cellular Base Stations to the Base Station Controller and integrates easily with Cegetel’s GSM network. Moreover, WALKair’s easily-deployable, pay-as-you-grow infrastructure allows Cegetel to expand their service offering, providing inexpensive, always-on Internet access to the island’s growing business communities. Best of all, WALKair is a robust and resilient solution for the carrier, functioning flawlessly even under the extremely heavy storm conditions that are a feature of life on La Réunion.
