Dutch Wireless Broadband Operator Xtratyme Experiences Tremendous Growth During Three Month Life
Over 300 corporates use wireless network running on Alvarion equipment for broadband services Tel-Aviv, 10 April 2003. Alvarion Ltd. (NASDAQ ;ALVR), a leading provider of wireless broadband solutions today announced that Dutch operator, Xtratyme, which only launched its network at the beginning of the year provides broadband services to over 300 corporations and contracts have been agreed with a further 400 companies.
Xtratyme has built both a backbone and an access network using the equipment and expertise of Alvarion. The network operates in the unlicensed 2.4GHz spectrum and has been live since the beginning of 2003. To date, the network has been rolled out in the eastern part of the Netherlands where high-speed internet access services are not widely available. Xtratyme acts as a carrier-of-carriers and sells its wireless bandwidth to regional ISPs who then provide access services to businesses and consumers.
Two regional ISPs who use Xtratyme’s wireless network are BetuweNet (www.betuwe.net and www.gadraadloos.nl/nl2/index.htm) in the city of Arnhem and Flakkee Net in the city of Oude Tonge.
Both ISPs are offering data services of up to 2Mbps with customers able to choose the speed of the service in line with their requirements and budget.
Ton Brand, founder of Xtratyme, said: “People are not interested in what technology is used to deliver high speed access – they just want always-on, competitively priced broadband services. DSL is not available in many areas of Holland and leased lines are extremely expensive. But that said, wireless is always going to be our first choice because it’s so quick and easy to build a network which can be scaled up as demand increases.”
Zvi Slonimsky, CEO of Alvarion, said: “Yet again we see wireless being used by regional ISPs in Europe to provide broadband services to businesses and residential customers. As in the US, regional ISPs are finding that wireless is a very cost effective access technology, which is extremely flexible and can generate revenues from day one. Xtratyme has created a great success with the connection of many customers during its short life and it won’t be long before the next 300 are onboard. “
