Alvarion's BreezeACCESS™ To Bring Internet Access To Hundreds Of Schools In Namibia

SchoolNet, A Bold Initiative of Namibia’s School Authority, Will Use A BWA Network To Hook Up 900 Schools Throughout a 54,000 km2 Region

Tel – Aviv, Israel, January 23, 2003 – Alvarion Ltd. (NASDAQ: ALVR), a leading provider of Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) solutions, today announced that it will deploy an Alvarion BWA network in the 2.4GHZ and 5.8Ghz frequency bands for Namibia’s ambitious SchoolNet program. SchoolNet in partnership with state-owned Telecom Namibia and a consortium of civil society organizations is building an unprecedented and innovative fixed-rate telecommunications network which will serve affordable Internet to all of Namibia’s educational institutions. The Telecom-SchoolNet partnership will erect 45 BreezeACCESS base stations to bring Internet access and voice services to more than 900 rural schools, two thirds of which do not even have a telephone line.

The order was secured with Satellite & Wireless Networking, South Africa’s leading integrator of wireless networks that distributes Alvarion’s products in Africa.

Commenting on the success, Lofty von Brandis of Satellite & Wireless Networking, said, “Given Namibia’s sparse copper infrastructure, Internet access has been an unattainable dream for schools outside of Namibia’s municipal centers. Alvarion’s extraordinary wireless technology gives us an affordable way to bring the Internet to the majority of Namibian schools and students. We believe this exposure will make a profound impact on the education in Namibia with the potential to make such innovations a significant model for replication elsewhere in Africa. We are proud to be part of this project, in which the Alvarion wireless solution was the only feasible one.”

Zvi Slonimsky, CEO of Alvarion, added, “We are delighted that our technology is contributing to higher quality education in emerging regions like Namibia. SchoolNet’s use of our equipment illustrates just how practical and cost-effective our BWA solutions can be, especially when infrastructure is lacking. We congratulate the program’s visionary founders for launching this ambitious project, and look forward to continued cooperation as SchoolNet becomes a reality.”
